Buying or Building a PC – Which is Better?

For the last 15 years there’s been a big discussion. Which is better: building a PC, or just buying one from a company?

The answer I’d give you a few years ago would be very straight forward. Always build your own computer. That was simply because you were able to save more money and still having the same, or even better, quality computer. These days it’s around the same cost in the end.

There’s one thing that I should point out. If you are going to be purchasing a pre-built computer you won’t have the same kind of quality as somebody who did everything themselves. You won’t be able to add on specific parts that you want, like CD copying hardware or a high end graphics card. So when buying a pre-built PC… you lose a bit of control and quality.

You’ll be fine though if you are only using the PC to do simple things like browsing the web and using normal PC programs that you can use on virtually any hardware. So make sure you know which crowd you’re a part of. Then you can find which is best for you.

Here’s another major point. How long are you going to want your PC to be with you for?

The reason why is simple: If you are buying a pre-built computer like an HP or Dell, then the hardware might not be upgradeable to future parts. This is to keep their costs low.

On the other hand, if you were able to build the computer yourself… You will probably be able to make it upgradeable in the future while keeping your cost really low.

This will give you way more performance for the same money spent. In a few years you can add a new processor, or a new RAM module, or even a new motherboard… and you won’t have to change out every other thing. It’s really easy to do and will cost very little instead of buying a whole new PC again. You can also just buy whatever comes out within the next 6 months (like let’s say a Xbox game adapter) and install it on your PC.

Just double check and make sure that you know what you’re doing. If you don’t you might not be able to make things work out, and it’s nice to have a manufacturer warranty sitting there to assist you if the PC messes up.

Here’s a site which recommends a CD burning tool you can use.
